How to Make Your Oil Pastel Toucans on Black Paper
Appropriate for Children Ages 7 and up
Difficulty: Easy
Total Time: 2×30 minutes
Materials:
- Black cardstock or black construction paper
- Pencil
- Oil pastels
- Black oil pastel
- White pencil crayon (optional)
- Paper towel or Kleenex
- Toucan reference photos
Instructions:
Step 1 – How to Draw a Toucan
Start by lightly sketching your toucan with pencil.
If you’re using the free drawing guide, follow the step-by-step instructions to draw your first bird. Once finished, rotate your paper and draw a second toucan facing another direction.
This overlapping arrangement creates movement and makes the finished artwork more visually interesting.
Next, add a few simple branches and tropical leaves around your toucans. These details help create a rainforest setting and fill the background.

Step 2 – How to Blend Oil Pastels on Black Paper
One of the most exciting parts of this project is creating the colorful background.
Choose two or three colors that blend well together. Shades of blue and purple work beautifully for a tropical rainforest effect.
Apply your darkest color first and gradually lighten your pressure as you move downward. Add your next color where the first color begins to fade, slightly overlapping the sections.
To blend the colors, fold a paper towel or Kleenex into a small triangle and gently rub the overlapping areas.
This technique softens transitions and creates smooth gradients while allowing the vibrant colors to stand out against the black paper.

Step 3 – Add Color to Your Toucans
Before coloring, take a look at photographs of real toucans for inspiration.
Try blending colors directly by overlapping them:
- Yellow and orange
- Orange and red
- Blue and green
- Green and yellow
This simple technique helps create smooth color transitions and gives the artwork a professional look.
Once the coloring is complete, use black oil pastel to strengthen important lines and add details to the feathers, beak, and branches.
