Step by Step Tutorial
Appropriate for Children Ages 6 and up
Difficulty: Easy
Total Time: 60 minutes
Materials:
- Cardboard strips
- Black Cardstock (8.5X 11″)
- Fluorescent paint/metallic paint/or any acrylic paint (you’ll also need white acrylic paint for the twinkles)
- Q-tips
- Paint tray or paper plate for pouring the paint
- Scissors for cutting the cardboard
Instructions:
Step 1 – Prepare your materials
Cut a few pieces of cardboard in a variety of lengths. This will allow you to create fireworks of different sizes. We used the Artecho Neon paint set because we love how vibrant the colors are.
Step 2 – Dip the cardboard in a paint color of your choice
We started with purple because it’s one of the darker colours in our palette, plus we also wanted to layer lighter colours on top of it.
I used the textured side of the cardboard, so our fireworks would have a crackly or textured appearance.
We created star shapes with our cardboard.
Step 3 – Make more fireworks
Continue making star shapes with different sizes of cardboard and different colors of paint.
Step 4 – Layer the paint
Apply a different colored paint on top of the star shapes that you’ve already created. We added some pink on top of our purple stars and some green on top of our blue stars. You can vary the sizes of cardboard that you use.
Keep layering the paint until you’re happy with your fireworks.
Step 5 – Add tips
Using a small piece of cardboard, add some paint to a few of the tips of your fireworks. The tips of your fireworks can be multicolored.
Step 6 – Add Twinkles
You can add specks of light or twinkles to your background. Using a Qtip, dip the end into white paint and apply it to your background.
Step 7 – Share and enjoy!
Creative Tips
- Use glow-in-the-dark paint for an extra magical touch!
- Experiment with different shapes of cardboard tools for unique firework designs.
- Add glitter while the paint is wet for extra sparkle.
- Frame your masterpiece!
- Try this craft with metallic paint! I used shades of gold paint to create the fireworks below.
