Celebrate Juneteenth with These 10 Free Coloring Pages

Juneteenth is a powerful day of remembrance, celebration, and hope. It marks the moment in 1865 when the last enslaved people in the United States finally received word that they were free—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. While it’s a day rooted in historical truth, Juneteenth is also about honoring Black culture, sharing stories, and fostering awareness in a way that brings all generations together.

To help families, educators, and kids engage with this important holiday in a meaningful (and fun!) way, we’re excited to offer 10 free Juneteenth coloring pages you can download and print right at home. Whether you’re planning a classroom activity, a family celebration, or just want to introduce the topic to young learners, these pages are a great starting point.

Why We Recognize Juneteenth

Before we dive into the coloring pages, let’s take a moment to understand why Juneteenth matters.

On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved people were free—news that came more than two years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation had officially ended slavery in Confederate states. The date became known as Juneteenth, a combination of “June” and “nineteenth.”

Juneteenth represents not only the end of slavery but also the ongoing struggle for justice, equality, and civil rights. Recognizing Juneteenth helps children understand the importance of freedom, resilience, and the value of every human being. It’s also a chance to highlight the achievements and contributions of Black Americans throughout history.

💡 How to Use These Juneteenth Coloring Pages

These aren’t just fun activities (though they are definitely fun). They’re also conversation starters.

Here are a few ideas for how you can use them:

1. Start a conversation at home or in the classroom
Print out a few pages and ask questions like,

  • “What do you think freedom means?”

  • “Why do you think this holiday is important?”

  • “What would it feel like to be told you were free after waiting years to hear it?”

2. Pair with a read-aloud or short video
Combine the coloring activity with a read-aloud about Juneteenth or a short, age-appropriate video explaining the history behind it. This gives kids context and helps them make connections.

3. Create a Juneteenth display
Hang up finished coloring pages to create a Juneteenth bulletin board or wall display. This can turn your learning space into a celebration of freedom and a reminder of the ongoing work for equity.

4. Include them in your Juneteenth celebration
Hosting a community event, classroom party, or family cookout? Set up a coloring station for kids to enjoy while adults chat. It’s an easy and accessible way to include younger participants in the celebration.

5. Spark art-inspired reflections
Ask kids to add their own words or drawings to the coloring pages. What symbols or messages would they include in a celebration of freedom?

Whether you’ve celebrated Juneteenth for years or you’re just starting to learn about it, this is a beautiful opportunity to come together. Use these coloring pages to honor the day, educate young minds, and continue the conversation about equality and justice in ways that feel real and age-appropriate.
