Valentine's Handprint Craft: A Beautiful Fingerprint Tree Craft for Kids
Valentine’s Day is the perfect time for kids to get creative and express their love through art. If you’re looking for a meaningful and fun activity, this Valentine’s handprint craft is a fantastic choice! Not only is it a simple and engaging project, but it also serves as a heartfelt keepsake that parents and loved ones will cherish for years to come. In this craft, children can use their fingers to create vibrant leaves and adorable hearts, making it a perfect Valentine’s activity.
In this post, we’ll walk you through the steps to create your very own Valentine’s handprint craft, discuss different ways to personalize it, and explore how this craft can be adapted for other seasons and special occasions.

Why Your Kids Will Love This Valentine’s Handprint Craft
Most kids love hands-on activities, and this Valentine’s handprint craft is perfect for little ones who enjoy getting a little messy with paint. Fingerprint crafts provide a sensory experience that encourages creativity while helping to develop fine motor skills. The joy of pressing tiny fingers into paint and seeing their unique fingerprints turn into leaves and hearts makes this activity both educational and fun.
Additionally, this craft is easy to modify based on your child’s age and skill level. Younger kids can simply stamp their fingerprints onto the tree, while older children may enjoy creating patterns, blending colors, or adding extra embellishments.
We used our tree templates to create this Valentine’s craft. You can click HERE or the image below to learn more about these tree templates, which can also be used for a variety of crafts.

How to Make a Valentine’s Handprint Craft: Fingerprint Tree Craft
Appropriate for Children Ages 6 and up
Difficulty: Easy
Total Time: 60 minutes
Materials:
- Tree Templates
- White Cardstock (8.5X 11″)
- Acrylic paint
- Glue stick
- Scissors
- Colored paper for the hearts (optional)
- Paint tray or paper plate for pouring the paint
Instructions:
Step 1: Get your materials ready
Below is a picture of the materials that I used to create this craft.
Step 2 – Draw or print a tree Template
To start your Valentine’s handprint craft, you’ll need a tree template. You can either draw a tree trunk with branches using a brown marker or crayon, or you can print one of the tree templates that I’ve created. Just click HERE to get them today!
Step 3 – Add Fingerprint Leaves
Dip your child’s finger into washable paint and start stamping it onto the branches to create fingerprint leaves. This is where the magic happens! Watching the tree fill up with colorful fingerprints is such a fun experience. You can stick to classic Valentine’s colors like red, pink, and purple, or experiment with a mix of colors to make it even more vibrant.

Step 4 – Create Fingerprint Hearts
To make the craft even more festive, use two overlapping fingerprints to create tiny hearts. Dip a finger into the paint and stamp it at a slight angle. Then, stamp another fingerprint at an opposite angle, forming a heart shape. This simple trick adds a sweet touch to the tree and makes the Valentine’s handprint craft extra special.

Step 5 – Cut and Glue Paper Hearts
Once all of your fingerprints leaves have been completed, you add some texture to this craft. Simply fold a piece of colored paper in half, cut out small paper hearts and glue them onto the branches. This step allows kids to mix different textures and materials, making their artwork even more visually appealing.

Step 6 – Let It Dry and Display It!
Once your child is happy with their creation, let it dry completely. After it dries, display it on the fridge, in a frame, or give it as a heartfelt gift to a loved one. This Valentine’s handprint craft makes a wonderful present for parents, grandparents, or teachers.

Step 7 – Ways to Personalize Your Valentine’s Handprint Craft
One of the best things about this fingerprint tree craft is that it can be easily personalized. Here are some fun ideas to make it unique:
- Add a Handprint Base: Instead of using a tree template, use your child’s handprint as the tree trunk! Simply paint their palm and fingers with brown paint and stamp it onto the paper. Once it dries, they can add fingerprint leaves and hearts on top.
- Use Different Color Schemes: While red, pink, and purple are traditional Valentine’s colors, you can switch things up by using different shades. Try a pastel palette for a soft and dreamy look or go bold with bright, contrasting colors, or use a rainbow color scheme.
- Incorporate Glitter or Sequins: A little sparkle can make your craft extra festive. After adding fingerprint hearts and leaves, sprinkle a little glitter over the wet paint for a shimmering effect.

Adapting This Craft for Other Seasons
While this craft is perfect for Valentine’s Day, it can easily be adapted for other seasons and occasions by changing the colors and themes. Here’s how:
- Spring: Use pastel-colored paints to create cherry blossom trees or bright greens for budding leaves.
- Summer: Opt for vibrant greens, yellows, and blues to represent the lush foliage and sunny skies.
- Autumn: Use shades of orange, red, and brown to create a fall-themed fingerprint tree.
- Winter: Try a snowy version by using white and light blue fingerprints to resemble frost-covered branches.
- Mother’s Day or Father’s Day: Add a personal touch by writing a heartfelt note and gifting it to parents.
- Christmas: Create a Christmas tree version by using green fingerprints and decorating it with small fingerprint ornaments in red and gold.
